Explain Everything: The Etch-A-Sketch Animator

11/3/2015

This afternoon I was thinking about the Etch-A-Sketch Animator which was the first digital frame-by-frame animation tool I ever used. I think it was way too hard (or required too much talent and creativity) to produce anything of quality beyond the examples given in the manual, but I did enjoy doing the baseball sequence.

In Explain Everything, you can simulate stop-motion animation simply by pressing the record button on and off very quickly. It is probably unlikely that you'll get 12 frames per second, but its still possible to mimic the effect. Here is a 5 second video of a bunch of square objects (like pixels on the Etch-A-Sketch) shifted in position very slightly with each record press.
