If you consider existence here on earth, there are two physical things necessary for such existence: people and the planet. That is, humans as mindful autonomous beings and a environment to support such beings with the elements needed to exist. Regardless of one's beliefs on the purpose of existence (i.e. life), there are two outcomes that must be avoided (prevented) to maintain existence: 1. We must not destroy each other. 2. We must not destroy our planet. This may seem over simplified, but it is almost certainly necessary when trying to understand the practices of humans which are grounded in implicit and explicit belief systems, the core of which is the nature, meaning, and purpose of existence and life itself.
From this core belief stem ontological belief systems (the nature of truth) and epistemological belief system (the nature of knowledge), a topic for another day. Happy new year.

The Damnwells write great songs - tasteful melodies, harmonies, and arrangements over pretty standard "4-chord rock" progressions. I have been listening to them non-stop for the past couple of weeks, paying close attention to how they construct their compositions. This week's quickly-thrown-together-thing uses a simple 3 chord progression inspired by the chorus of a song called 'Last Day of The New Age' which I thought fitting for the final day of 2015.
