At the last meeting of my class at Teachers College, special guest Linda Vasu conducted a workshop on 'hacking the essay.' It was an interesting way to bring arts and engineering into understanding and expression in traditional humanities. We were asked to read a section from the Great Gatsby and do a series of sketches and drawings based on what we read - first literal and then increasingly more abstract. We also talked about windows and the role they have played in literature. I really enjoyed the challenge and wished a similar approach was used when I was wrestling with fiction back in high school.
