There were lots of great ideas being shared at #MiamiDevice last week. I was only there for one day but I was very impressed by the event - both the tone and the execution. Well done. Tony Vincent did a session called "We're Live!..." about students and teachers broadcasting. He mainly focused on the app Periscope. Now I had already been familiar with the tool after my first experience last summer, but I purposefully went to Tony's sessions to reignite that enthusiasm I had for it then. I WILL find a way to get it into my regular routine. He has tons of great suggestions on his website, but he said the big takeaway should be getting/using a microphone like the iRig Mic HD. I also really like the color palette he had in his slides and related infographic. I also went to Adam Bellow's session titled Hacking Keynote. The person sitting next to me said he thought the session was going to be a keynote about hacking. I thought that was funny. But he ended up staying for a while because Adam's session was so interesting. Adam gave an 'under the hood' tour of some of his most creative Keynote (Mac OS X) slide designs and animations. I only had my new iPad Pro with me. I was not convenient for storing and retrieving repeatedly in a conference setting. But the screen is really incredible. I'm going to continue to find ways to make it my go to device for certain content creation.

The potential of our species
is limited only by the control-driven rules imposed on young people and the limited imaginations of those who create those rules. LaGuardia Airport makes Newark's Terminal A seem like paradise. Flying American Airlines out of LaGuardia makes flying United out of Newark seem like a catered full-service private jet. Having flown United out of Newark so much recently I had not realized how little American Airlines and LaGuardia had progressed. Here is something composed while sitting on the tarmac in Miami for an hour because of busy airport traffic in LaGuardia.
The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States of America provides The World Factbook, a public domain resource with current high resolution maps, comparative data, and images of flags. All they ask is that you cite The World Factbook as the source and NOT use or reproduce the CIA seal. Noted. Here is a downloadable project with three of the maps (world by geography, politics, and timezone).
I haven't got around to purchasing Adobe Acrobat Pro when really the only feature I really relied on was being able to easily reduce the size of a PDF. But then I Googled it to see if it was possible to do this same function in Preview in Mac OS X and of course, it was! When on the export screen in Preview, change the 'Quartz Filter' to Reduce File Size and that's it! I shrunk a 40 MB document to 1.7 MB instantly! I'm a big fan of Dr. Nick Morgan. I highly recommend subscribing to his posts on Forbes. Last week on his Public Words blog he shared some interesting tips for introducing a speaker. Great stuff.

One of my favorite singer-songwriters is Josh Rouse. He has a knack for creating really nice arrangements and really catchy melodies. The beat and 2-chord progression follow a similar pattern to the intro to 'Dressed Up Like Nebraska.' All parts performed with a keyboard or guitar with GarageBand for Mac.
This afternoon I was thinking about the Etch-A-Sketch Animator which was the first digital frame-by-frame animation tool I ever used. I think it was way too hard (or required too much talent and creativity) to produce anything of quality beyond the examples given in the manual, but I did enjoy doing the baseball sequence. In Explain Everything, you can simulate stop-motion animation simply by pressing the record button on and off very quickly. It is probably unlikely that you'll get 12 frames per second, but its still possible to mimic the effect. Here is a 5 second video of a bunch of square objects (like pixels on the Etch-A-Sketch) shifted in position very slightly with each record press. |
